The Squeakling by Kristin Kelly

Max and Spike's owners have brought home a new baby and all the attention is on this 'squeakling'. Studying it closely, they note that it likes to shake things, make big noises and it smells bad. In order to get more attention, the pair come up with two plans; Plan A is to do the same as the squeakling, while plan B is to be helpful. Neither work, so the pair of pups decide to leave home.

This story, by Kristin Kelly, won the Storyline Joy Cowley award for 2023.

Kelly explores family life from a dog's perspective. As a teacher, Kelly has written books to teach topics or share stories when she hasn’t been able to find the exact book she wanted on library shelves. This one opens up a way for children to explore their own feelings and experiences when a new baby joins their family. It's not just a book for a child about to become a big sister or brother though. By writing the book through the dog's viewpoint, it makes a great book for exploring empathy, animal welfare, family dynamics and much more.

Of course, you can also put aside the deeper meanings and enjoy it as a great story. Kelly knows her audience well, perfectly pitching the story to younger readers.

However, she also knows it will be adults reading and she makes it a great read aloud with lots of room for expression and interaction. The names of the humans are a nice touch too.

Illustrator Ronja Schipper captures the humour with bold, expressive artwork. Max and Spike are full of character, personality and energy.

The Squeakling is a deserved winner of the Joy Cowley Award, full of humour and heart. A lovely addition to any child's library.
