What do artists look for in a studio? Do they work in silence or with music… in a shared space or in solitude? How do they harness the light?
Studios of Their Own is a captivating exploration of the workspaces and habits of over 50 iconic artists. Alex expertly blends history, inspiration and creativity.
“In our previous book, Rooms of Their Own (2022), James and I explored the workspaces of writers. In this new collaboration the focus is on painters, sculptors, photographers, quilters and installation artists around the world and the places where they created their masterpieces, not all with four walls and a lock on the door,” says Alex.
From Claude Monet’s serene garden to Frida Kahlo’s talisman-filled bed, this beautifully illustrated book explores the role of physical spaces in shaping artistic output. Studios of Their Own showcases more than 50 artists, including Vincent van Gogh, Andy Warhol and Trace Emin. More than a collection of biographies, this is an intimate look at the creative process. It thoughtfully led to my own reflection on the connection between space and inspiration.
Alex’s writing is engaging and insightful, weaving together anecdotes and practical details about how artists create. I particularly enjoyed discovering the unique rituals and routines of many of the artists. I was transported to other times and places and gained a deeper insight into the creative process.
Studios of Their Own is a must-read for art lovers and is the perfect companion to Rooms of Their Own: Where Great Writers Write.
