During long, sun-drenched days, the ocean is more than a rejuvenating holiday destination - it’s a place where memories are made.
“I grew up in the western suburbs of Sydney, and it was always a highlight when we would stash our foam surfboards in the back of the Holden Kingswood on the weekend and drive to the beach at Maroubra or Coogee, near my grandparents’ home. I savoured every moment: the north-easterly breeze and the thrill of catching a big bottle-green wave back to the shore on my father’s shoulders,” says author Ali Gripper.
Saltwater Cure is a heartwarming collection of stories that celebrates the transformative power of the sea. Through the voices of conservationists, athletes and everyday ocean lovers, she highlights how the water provides comfort, strength and a sense of belonging.
This book beautifully weaves personal experiences into a universal narrative. From author Tim Winton’s reflections on the ocean’s rhythm to surfer Layne Beachley and cinematographer Valerie Taylor’s adventures, each story underscores the sea’s ability to heal both mind and body. Saltwater Cure also explores how the ocean brings people together and builds connections, highlighting initiatives like Yusra Metwally’s Swim Sisters.
“One thing quickly became clear as I launched into the interviews: not only did the power of the ocean transcend age, faith, gender, cultural background and physical ability, it imbued every person I spoke to with a great respect for mother nature. Whether they were swimming, surfing, sailing, diving, fishing or walking along the shoreline, they all mentioned that they were yielding to something greater than themselves, something they could not control or change,” says Ali.What makes Saltwater Cure stand out is its dual focus: revealing the ocean’s profound impact on wellbeing but a poignant reminder of its vulnerability. Every contributor’s reverence for the sea is coupled with an urgent call to protect it.
“The more time people spend in the salt water, it seems, the more they care about it. Many were deeply concerned by the stresses to which the ocean has been subjected due to climate change, a rising thermostat and the increase in ocean refuse.”
Saltwater Cure is perfect for anyone intrigued by the intersection of human resilience, personal growth and nature - or simply a thoughtful uplifting read to take to the beach this summer.
