Based on Miriama Kamo and Rangi Matamua's Matariki Around the World this book includes a range of activities that will keep whānau and tamariki entertained, and informed, for hours.
Illustrator Isobel Joy Te Aho-White (Ngāti Kahungungu ki te Wairoa, Kai Tahu) has created a variety of drawing and craft pages to celebrate mātauranga Māori. It is much more than just a colouring book, with recipes, word puzzles, nature activities, crafts and much more hidden within its pages.
This is also much more than a book about Matariki. The pages burst with kupu Māori and the context makes it clear without the need for translations. The pages also cover an extensive array of mātauranga Māori - from conservation and the environment, to folklore and food, and much more in between. The pages, while structured, offer the chance for readers to expand their knowledge and experiences - a page, 'At the Seashore', for example, discusses the need to care for the environment while also offering space for readers to practice their drawing skills.
This book should be an essential resource in every classroom - it's not 'busy work' but offers a great jumping off point for some in-depth learning around Matariki and te ao Māori.
Activity books can be a great resource for families to keep children entertained for the winter months, conveniently right when Matariki falls. Colouring and activity books provide mental and physical benefits - colour recognition, fine motor skills and focus to name just a few.
My Matariki Colouring and Activity Book is a fun and clever way to incorporate educational components, while also nurturing creativity.
