When Leo was five, he wanted a real bike for Christmas so Dad helped him write the letter to Santa. Leo wanted to see Santa and say thank you, but he only ever visits when Leo is sleeping. Why can’t Santa visit during the day? So begins a Christmas story by Joy Cowley and beautifully illustrated by Jessica Twohill.
Cowley needs no introduction to New Zealand readers, and this is another title that showcases her writing style. Cowley uses language that appeals to a young reader, with a simple pace and some juicy words. She never talks down to her readers either. The story encourages critical thinking and imagination, with some wonderful opportunities for discussion during and after reading.
Illustrator Twohill brings Leo and his family, and the big man in red, to life in vibrant colour and bold artwork. There's lots of different perspectives and viewpoints to catch the reader's eye. It's also a lovely touch to see the inclusion of Charlie Twohill's, aged 5, bike drawing included within the pages.
Without spoiling the ending of the book, I loved the final page - my family has an identical story from my younger sister so it brought back a rush of nostalgia and laughter.
Leo and Santa is a simple, yet sweet, Christmas story from one of our most beloved New Zealand children's authors that readers both young and old will enjoy.
