Generations of children have played on the trusty elephant slide in the park. But now her tusks are broken, her paint is cracked and her bones are weary. Even her pink toenails have lost their shine. Children visiting the park run instead to the shiny new playground equipment. But Elly the elephant's sad face captures the heart of one little boy, who invites her home with him. And there, Noah discovers that his dad also played on the elephant slide as a boy.
Together, they decide to give Elly a makeover.
Inspired by the Bishopdale elephant slide in a Christchurch playground, this is a poignant story that will tug on the heartstrings of any reader. Author Melanie Koster has written a charming story, no rhyme in sight, full of joy and nostalgia. She uses wonderful language to bring an imagined story to life, with Elly joining in on some lovely family moments. There's a sweet underlying story of kindness and empathy that is told in a natural way.
Illustrator Jenny Cooper brings an added spark, with each character brought to life with charm and plenty of character. Her illustrations always have just the right touch of whimsy and realism, with pops of magic within.
Elephant Park is a refreshing, joyful, feel-good read that will delight younger readers and bring a touch of nostalgia to older readers.
