When Granddad unveils his latest wacky invention, chaos is unleashed. His state-of-the-art robo-dog is frighteningly advanced, but was DaVinci—the most disobedient dog ever—the best choice to replicate? And can his quick-thinking grandkids stop this mechanical menace before it fetches the police?
Drawing on his passions for science fiction and humour, author Tom E Moffatt has released the sequel to his debut novel, Barking Mad.
A Screw Loose is a fast paced and action-packed read for those aged 8 to 12.
Featuring a mind-swapping sci-fi aspect, at times I was a little lost. Barking Mad was first published in 2012 and a quick refresher would have made the transition to the latest addition a bit easier.
That said, the non-stop action drew me in. Fingers and Sally's frantic chase is full of laughs, gasps and, underneath it all, a strong sibling bond.
Author Tom E Moffatt has said he wasn't a fan of reading or writing at school. During his time at university he was diagnosed with dyslexia, which helped explain a few things.
It very much feels like he has written this book for his younger self - and it will definitely help reignite, or ignite, the passion of reading for other reluctant readers. Illustrations from Paul Beavis help draw the connection for the more visual readers. Short, snappy chapters give children success from the very start.
A perfect mix of creativity and chaos. A Screw Loose will sweep up younger readers.
